This month’s Wake Up Keweenaw will focus on Copper Shores Community Health Foundation. Over the last couple of years, Copper Shores has gone through many changes including the merger of three longtime nonprofit organizations (Copper Country Senior Meals, Dial Help and Portage Health Foundation), creating a new initiative focused on helping those in generational poverty (Bridges), and launching a new brand to encompass all of this work. In that time the organization has gone from five employees to more than 60.
All of these changes have been made in an effort to improve the health of Michigan’s Copper Country - the same focus that was in place when Portage Health Foundation was founded a decade ago. At this presentation participants will learn how all of this comes together to inspire and lead remarkable changes in an effort to make our community the healthiest it can be. That includes overviews of Meals on Wheels, Victim Support, Outreach & Education, Bridges, and more direct-to-community programming, a look at how this affects granting and scholarship opportunities, and a peak into our big-picture vision for a more healthful tomorrow and an invitation to get involved in what’s happening moving forward.
Kevin brings a unique perspective and a great deal of understanding of the challenges that face the people of this region and the demands placed on the nonprofit charitable organizations. In his role as President/CEO of Copper Shores Community Health Foundation, he combines his own lived-experiences with his own work history (which has included several sectors including youth rehabilitation, vocational training for adults with disabilities and healthcare) to better position the foundation and its partners to meet the pressing needs in our community. He is motivated to serve and do what we can to make the region - our home - a place where all people can live and thrive.
