Student Scholarships
Scholarship Opportunities in Michigan's Copper Country
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation is committed to providing local individuals and students throughout Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties with scholarship opportunities to help them continue their education after high school. Reinvesting money through college scholarships is one way Copper Shores believes it can uphold its Strategic Goals & Objectives, positively affect the health of the region, and attract and retain future healthcare leaders.
Copper Shores Educational Scholarship
Copper Shores will award four - $5,000 scholarships starting with the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year. These scholarships will be renewable for up to three additional consecutive years (4 years total) for undergraduate education providing the student maintains eligibility.
Applications will be redacted to ensure unbiased review by committee, who will review the finalist applications and make an award decision.
Please note that this scholarship award is separate from Copper Shores “Making a Difference Scholarship” program administered by Michigan Tech University.
Copper Shores/KEDA Scholarship
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance are offering this scholarship for students graduating from public high schools in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties.
Copper Shores will award six - $2,000 scholarships starting with the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year. This scholarship is a one-time award.
Applications will be redacted to ensure unbiased review by committee, who will review the finalist applications and make an award decision.
Kirkish Educational Scholarship
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation has established the Joseph B. Kirkish, Ph.D. Educational Scholarship award. Copper Shores will award a $2,500 scholarship to two (2) graduating seniors.
The scholarship is a one-time award. Copper Shores' intention is that recipients use the scholarship to help pay for education costs at a post-secondary school of their choosing.
Copper Shores' Grants Management Committee will anonymously review the finalist applications to make an award decision.
Kirkish Congregational Scholarship
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation has established the Joseph B. Kirkish, Ph.D. Congregational Educational Scholarship award.
Copper Shores will award one (1) $2,500 scholarship to two graduating high school seniors or currently enrolled college / university students from our service area of Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw or Ontonagon counties.
The scholarship is a one-time award to be expended in the 2025-2026 academic year.
At the donor’s request, the student must be a congregation member of St. Ignatius Loyola and/or St. Albert the Great Churches located in Houghton, Michigan, and a letter of recommendation from the parish clergy needs to be included with the application.
Copper Shores will anonymously review the finalist applications to make an award decision.
McIntyre Family Educational Scholarship
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation has established the McIntyre Family Educational Scholarship award.
Copper Shores will award a $2,000 scholarship to two (2) graduating seniors from Ontonagon High School. The scholarship is a one-time award to be expended in the 2025-2026 academic year.
The student must be intending to be enrolled in a certificate program or an associate degree in a skilled trades or career technical education program.
Copper Shores' Grants Management Committee who will anonymously review the finalist applications to make an award decision.
Kirkish Phi Kappa Tau Scholarship
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation has established the Joseph B. Kirkish, Ph.D. Phi Kappa Tau Educational Scholarship. Copper Shores will award two $2,500 scholarships to members of Phi Kappa Tau. This scholarship is a one-time award to be expended in the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 academic year.
Applications for the Kirkish Phi Kappa Tau Scholarship are due Friday, March 7, 2025. The application and supplemental materials can be submitted via email, mail, or in person. Mailed submissions must be postmarked no later than March 7, 2025.
Provide a #CopperShoresScholar Update
All Copper Shores Scholars are invited to provide us an update on what they've been up to recently. The update could be as long or as short as you want it to be, and could include anything from graduating from your program, a recent job you've taken, a professional accomplishment, publication or recognition.

Many additional opportunities at Michigan Technological University are also available, especially for those from our four-county community. If a student is interested in these scholarships, they are urged to contact the financial aid office at Michigan Tech.
