Copper Shores Community Health Foundation has awarded five organizations 2024 Small Grant awards, totaling $7,801.26. These grants are meant to help meet the needs of the Copper Country by focusing on health-related events, activities or opportunities.
Barkell Elementary School in Hancock currently has no ADA playground equipment for the students that use mobility aids. With the funding from Copper Shores, Barkell Elementary School is implementing two handicap accessible swing sets.
Equipment Loans of the Keweenaw (ELK) is a project of Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD) aimed at bringing adaptive sports and recreation to the community. With this funding, ELK is upgrading their website and brochures to meet growing communications needs as the program grows in popularity.
Recess is much more than a break from learning, helping kids develop socially, emotionally regulate and get the recommended amount of exercise. CLK Schools is using the Small Grant funding to purchase baseball bats, hockey nets, basketballs and more to give children more opportunities to engage in physical activity.
Canterbury House is not officially affiliated with Michigan Technological University, but still focuses heavily on supporting students, especially the international student community and LGBT+ community. With the funding, Canterbury House is streamlining operations and expanding their food pantry assistance program to more students.
Hobbies and activities are important to upkeep as people age, as it is good for both their mental and physical health. With the funds from the Small Grant, Ontonagon Artist Collective will be hosting a watercolor event for seniors, every Wednesday.
