September 2024 Meals on Wheels Menu Highlight
August 28, 2024 | By Emilie Jacques
Copper Shores Meals on Wheels is celebrating an exciting achievement for the second month in a row by featuring locally sourced ingredients in every meal provided to seniors. This accomplishment follows months of dedicated efforts to establish partnerships with nearly 50 local producers, alongside the support of the Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) grant.
In September, Meals on Wheels is serving up a diverse array of tasty and nutritious dishes, both classics and something new, that seniors will be sure to enjoy. This initiative is made possible through a significant $1.28 million LFPA grant, which has been instrumental in facilitating the purchase of local food and the necessary equipment for processing substantial quantities of fresh meat and produce.
Notable meals coming out of the kitchen in September include:
- September 12: A fresh salad made from 100% local ingredients, featuring greens from Ghost House Farm and chicken from Buried Stone Farms.
- September 16: A hearty chili made with bison from Circle K Ranch, introducing a new recipe from a frequent partner.
- September 18: A classic meatloaf prepared with beef from Frozen Farms Co., a meal favored by many seniors.
- September 30: Comforting mac and cheese accompanied by ham from Buried Stone Farms.
The LFPA grant has been crucial in enabling Meals on Wheels to make substantial changes and scale up its local food purchases. This support ensures that the program can continue to offer nutritious, locally sourced meals to seniors in the community. To sustain these enhancements beyond the duration of the grant, the organization encourages community members to contribute through one-time donations or recurring support. Donations play a vital role in feeding local seniors with locally sourced food.
