2024-12-12-Meet-&-Eat---Promotion---OL--v4-1x1-1Copper Shores Meals on Wheels is known for its home deliveries, but also serves freshly cooked, homemade family style meals every day of the week at its Meet & Eat sites, including in Mohawk at Keweenaw Pines.

With winter knocking at the door, isolation becomes a growing problem for many seniors. Meet & Eat offers local seniors the opportunity to gather with peers over a shared meal, for both nutrition and camaraderie. Robyn Matthews, the new Meet & Eat site coordinator in Mohawk, is eager to feed more people and provide that service.

“I love being able to feed people food that they enjoy,” said Matthews. “The conversations I hear, the fellowship I see, it means a lot to me.”

Matthews is a lifelong Yooper, working more than 42 years in food service at multiple locations in the Copper Country, including Michigan Technological University Food Service and waitressing at the well-loved Slim’s Cafe in Mohawk.

Mohawk Meet & Eat has been around for a long time, and currently has room to serve more seniors. The Mohawk site is cozy and quiet, located on the first floor of the Keweenaw Pines  at entrance C. This wheelchair and mobility aid accessible site offers comforting feelings of home, and a panoramic view of the forest behind the apartments, creating a welcoming environment for all.

Gathering with peers for a nutritionally balanced meal encourages both daily physical activity and the opportunity to connect with others, improving mental health. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends, children and grandchildren with them, creating precious memories.

“No one should have to eat alone if they don’t want to,” said Matthews. “Please consider joining us for great food, conversation and fellowship.”

Meat & Eat is free for people 60 years and older, and $13 per meal for people under the age of 60. Extra meals for people 60 years and older cost $8 per meal. For those that are 60 years and older, and able to contribute, Meals on Wheels suggests a donation of $8 per meal. All meals include a main entree and one to two side dishes.
