Introducing the #GiveCopperCountry Amplification Fund
October 22, 2024 | By Emilie Jacques
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation is excited to announce the launch of the #GiveCopperCountry Amplification Fund. This is a fresh take on the GivingTuesday campaign that has put more than $3.6 million into nonprofit organizations serving Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties since starting in 2017.
The fund follows the same basic idea as the match previously did, with organizations earning a portion of the Amplification Fund based on how much money is donated to them during the annual GivingTuesday campaign. This year Copper Shores is starting the fund with $200,000, and donors will have the opportunity to donate directly to that fund, or support any of the causes that are participating in this year’s campaign individually.
“We’ve heard feedback from donors and nonprofits that the language around the word ‘match’ can be confusing or seem misleading,” said Michael H. Babcock, director of communications and donor relations at Copper Shores. “This should help people understand the logistics of how their donation will be amplified, and hopefully inspire the community to help us increase the amount available in the amplification fund.”
Donations are expected to open for the 2024 #GiveCopperCountry campaign on Tuesday, November 12 and will continue right through 11:59 p.m. on GivingTuesday itself - Tuesday, December 3, 2024. One hundred percent of donor contributions made during the campaign will go to the nonprofits.
What is the Amplification Fund?
The #GiveCopperCountry Amplification Fund is a dedicated pool of money, starting at $200,000, that will amplify all donations made to participating nonprofits. For example, if total donations reach $500,000 and a nonprofit raises $50,000, or 10% of total donations, that organization would receive 10% of the Amplification Fund, maximizing the donor’s impact.
How to amplify your donation
To take advantage of the amplification fund, donations must be made through Copper Shores’ GivingTuesday campaign between November 12 and December 3, 2024. Every donor’s contribution made during this period will be amplified by the fund. Donations will be accepted online at coppershores.org/givingtuesday or in person at Copper Shores Community Health Foundation’s Mission Support office at 400 Quincy Street in downtown Hancock.

Amplification Fund FAQs
What is an amplification fund?
An amplification fund is a pool of money set aside for an event or campaign, used to encourage donors by amplifying external donations made to that event or campaign.
What is the difference between the Amplification Fund and the match?
Not much! In addition to a different name that better reflects the fund’s purpose, the Amplification Fund can be donated to, increasing the amount that gets split among nonprofits.
Will my donation be amplified?
Yes. Every donation made through Copper Shores during GivingTuesday’s donation period will be amplified using the Amplification Fund. Copper Shores is starting the fund with $200,000. If more than $200,000 is donated, nonprofits will receive a portion of the $200,000 equal to the proportion of total donations they brought in.
For example, if $500,000 was donated and a nonprofit brought in $50,000 of that, they would have brought in 10% of the total, and would receive 10% of the amplification fund. That would mean $50,000 was donated and Copper Shores is amplifying the amount with 10% of what’s available in the Amplification Fund. Every penny donated to the nonprofits goes to the nonprofits.
Do I have to donate through Copper Shores to amplify my donation?
Yes. Donations must be made through Copper Shores’ GivingTuesday campaign, #GiveCopperCountry, between November 12 and December 3, 2024 to be eligible for the Amplification Fund.
Can I add to the Amplification Fund?
Yes. By donating to the #GiveCopperCountry Amplification Fund, the initial $200,000 increases, further amplifying all participating nonprofits' donation totals.
